Overview

As of August 2003, there have been 2398 missions that have carried the designation "Cosmos." It is a catch-all name that has been given to any craft that has remained in Earth orbit; many programs have a dual designation (e.g. Sputnik 12-18 were Cosmos 2-8). The last about 2300 Cosmos missions have mainly been military and communications satellites.
